SKIN TYPES

NORMAL SKIN is very rare with adults and adolescents. It is a privilege of small children and babies. The characteristic features of normal skin are a light pinkish color and smooth surface without visible pores, oiliness or dryness. It has a sufficient supply of sebum and moisture and is usually free of blemishes.

COMBINATION SKIN is usually oily in the middle of the forehead, around the nose and on the chin. It may show large pores and blackheads. The cheeks and the area around the eyes and temples are dry and sometimes flaky.

DRY SKIN is usually thin and flaky with fine lines and lack of elasticity. It may be deficient in moisture (dehydrated), sebum (oil dry), or both.

OILY SKIN is most common in adolescents, but also occurs in adults. It is shiny and thick with large, pronounced pores resembling and orange peel. Having an over abundance of sebum, it may or may not have blackheads and/or cysts.

SENSITIVE SKIN is characterized by reactivity to chemicals, heat, cold and touch. It may be couperose (having broken capillaries), rashy, itchy, dry or flaky.

MATURE SKIN is loose, usually with lines and wrinkles. Can be saggy (loss of muscle tone and elasticity). May have discoloration.
